Apprentice Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician
Protyre, Southern Road, Southampton. 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, Quayconnect, U1A, U1E, X4 Solent Ranger, X5 Solent Ranger, X7 and X7R bus stands are a 12 minute walk away. Southampton Central train station is an 11 minute walk.
£6.40 an hour, 8:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm Saturday, 40-45 hours a week

 
Protyre is the retail branch of The Micheldever Group. Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) was founded in 1972 as a part-time venture, offering car servicing and tyres and has a history of providing customers with a friendly, local service whilst encompassing big brand choice, quality, value and peace of mind.
 
The Tyreland Southampton garage was originally opened in 2006. Protyre Southampton have achieved high standards across levels of customer service, their workshop and equipment and their organisation and management processes, signifying a high level of service and quality will be provided every time.
Protyre Southampton are also part of the FOXY Lady approved network of garages. The centre has been identified as a female friendly garage, meaning they don’t overcharge, patronise or sell women anything they don’t need.
 
Within the role you will shadow and learn servicing: working to guidelines to ensure a vehicle is running at optimum performance, maintenance: replacing parts that have wear and tear before they fail and repair: diagnosing the reason for vehicle failure and fixing the problem.
The techniques and daily responsibilities you will learn will include:
  • Using diagnostic, mechanical, and electrical measuring equipment to investigate vehicle faults and identify their underlying causes 
  • Inspecting and preparing customers vehicles ready for mechanical work 
  • Removing, repairing, or replacing components to the correct specification 
  • Contributing to a safe working environment, by working within Health and Safety processes 
  • Admin and customer service duties that include updating job cards

Qualifications

GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both, proof of certificates is required.

Due to the demands of the role, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.

What does the programme include?

This apprenticeship will focus on light vehicle diagnostic processes, fault finding and equipment as well as industry relevant skills and training for example apprentices will practice:
  • Inspecting Light Vehicles using prescribed methods
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, including the maintenance of key equipment and carrying out general housekeeping
  • Use specific company IT systems within the workplace, including Point-of-sale systems and hand-held devices.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues
  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability
On completion of this Standard the Auto-care Technician will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if they wish as an Associate Member. They would also gain entry onto the IMI Professional Register.

What attendance is required?

Attendance at College will be required on weekly on a Monday. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work.

It is a Government requirement for you to spend 6 hours a week working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.

Learning and assessment

Apprentices build a portfolio of work and work place assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange on-site visits to observe the apprentices’ ability and skills in their daily role. It is important for the apprentice to take ownership of their own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. The apprentice’s final grade will be determined by the collective assessments known as “the end point assessment” and has a Pass/Distinction grade.

The three assessments are:
  • Online knowledge based tests
  • Skills test (knowledge and behaviours are observed in the workplace)
  • Professional discussion (apprentice is to demonstrate that they can apply the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours in the Standard)
Future prospects

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee, Protyre would like to offer you a full time job.
Protyre give their full support to apprentices. Once fully qualified and in recognition of their achievements, Protyre award a tool box to each apprentice (and insurance) worth £500.00 as well as contribute towards the cost of a driving test.

Things to keep in mind
  • Weekly working hours: Apprentices under the age of 18 will work 40 hours per week. Apprentices over the age of 18 will work 45 hours per week.
  • Initial pay will be at the appropriate apprentice rate. Apprentices over the age of 18 will earn national minimum wage once 6 months service and probation are completed.
